“Sumerians The First Civilization”

“Sumerians The First Civilization”

Today is a special day for me because today is the day I share what I’ve learned and researched over the years. For my first blog article, I would like to present what is generally accepted as the founders of the first civilization, the Sumerians, also known as “the black-headed people.”

The Beginning

According to Oxford University, a civilization is a stage of social development identified by the formation of organized communities and permanent settlements with oral or written records and history, traditions, religious faiths, laws, shared values, customs, beliefs, and artistic achievements.

I once took a course called The Bible in Light of the Ancient Near East by Dr. Nili Samet from Bar-Ilan University. The date for the beginning of ancient Mesopotamia was around 3200 B.C. This date was given because of the first writing system, the pictographic script, which is why the Sumerians were considered the founders of the first civilization.

This doesn’t mean that other people, like the Aboriginal Australians or the ancient Egyptians near the Nile River, weren’t around.

There are a lot of arguments about where the Sumerians came from. Some people believe they came from the East, possibly India, and others think they came from Europe somewhere, and then others say they maybe come from Africa.

The Sumerians are not the indigenous people of Ancient Mesopotamia.

Evidence suggests that the Ubaidians inhabited Sumer before the Sumerians, even though evidence suggests that Sumer is derived from the Sumerians.

So where did the Sumerians originate from?

Tracing The Genetics

What I’ve learned researching and learning about the Sumerian people’s haplogroups is “the Phylogeny of Y-chromosome haplogroups and their frequencies (%) in Marsh Arab and Iraqi populations. Haplogroups are labelled according to the Y Chromosome Consortium [1718] and the International Society of Genetic Genealogy [16]. Differently from previously reported [19], the M365 mutation was observed in two J1-Page08 Y-chromosomes (Marsh Arabs). In these two subjects, M365 was observed in association with the new mutation L267.2 discovered while typing the M365 marker. It consists of an A to G transition at nucleotide position 159. The markers P37, M253, M223 of haplogroup I, M81, and M293 of haplogroups E, and M367, M368, and M369 of haplogroup J1 were typed but not observed. A star (*) indicates a paragroup: a group of Y chromosomes not defined by any reported phylogenetic downstream mutation. nt: not tested. (a) Heterogeneity.”

Ancient Mesopotamia

The mythology of gods creating humanity, reincarnation, the flood, and even the idea of vampires was first recorded in ancient Mesopotamia by the Sumerians.

I have read many books about ancient Mesopotamia and learned quite a lot, such as how the Sumerians are responsible for many things that we use today, like the chariot, the plow, metallurgy, and games such as checkers. In addition to that, I also learned that they kept records of marriages, business transactions, ownership rights, and even recipes.

Samuel Noah Kramer has a book called, History Begins at Sumer: Thirty-Nine Firsts in Recorded History, and it’s “a detailed account of the achievements of the Sumerians, who lived in what is now southern Iraq. They were the developers of the cuneiform system of writing, perhaps their greatest contribution to civilization, which allowed humanity to record laws and literature for the first time. The book presents a cross-section of the Sumerian “firsts” in all the major fields of human endeavor, including government and politics, education and literature, philosophy and ethics, law and justice, agriculture and medicine, even love and family.”

In the 19th century, European archeologists were looking to excavate locations mentioned in the Bible, places like Babylon and Nineveh; instead, they stumbled across the Sumerians by mistake.

Below, you’ll be able to read what the Sumerians recorded on cuneiform tablets according to The Electronic Corpus Texts of Sumerian Literature. If you want a hard copy, I highly recommend reading this book. It’s the updated version of what they have online here https://etcsl.orinst.ox.ac.uk/

The Flood story: c.1.7.4
After An, Enlil, Enki and Ninḫursaĝa had fashioned the black-headed people, they also made animals multiply everywhere, and made herds of four-legged animals exist on the plains, as is befitting. (approx. 32 lines missing)

Enki and the world order: c.1.1.3

The Anuna gods address affectionately the great prince who has travelled in his Land: “Lord who rides upon the great powers, the pure powers, who controls the great powers, the numberless powers, foremost in all the breadth of heaven and earth; who received the supreme powers in Eridug, the holy place, the most esteemed place, Enki, lord of heaven and earth — praise!”

Enki and the world order: c.1.1.3

All the lords and rulers, the incantation-priests of Eridug and the linen-clad priests of Sumer, perform the purification rites of the Abzu for the great prince who has travelled in his land; for Father Enki they stand guard in the holy place, the most esteemed place. They …… the chambers ……, they …… the emplacements, they purify the great shrine of the Abzu ……. They bring there the tall juniper, the pure plant. They organise the holy …… in the great watercourse …… of Enki. Skilfully they build the main stairway of Eridug on the Good Quay. They prepare the sacred uzga shrine, where they utter endless prayers. (7 lines fragmentary or unclear)

Enki and the world order: c.1.1.3

The lord, the great ruler of the Abzu, issues instructions on board the ‘Stag of the Abzu’ — the great emblem erected in the Abzu, providing protection, its shade extending over the whole land and refreshing the people, the pillar and pole planted in the …… marsh, rising high over all the foreign lands. The noble captain of the lands, the son of Enlil, holds in his hand the sacred punt-pole, a meš tree ornamented in the Abzu which received the supreme powers in Eridug, the holy place, the most esteemed place. The hero proudly lifts his head towards the Abzu. (6 lines missing or unclear)”

only if we know our past can we make our future dierent .no reason why i should forget my owen tribe ‘s and seek to claim someone elses .that is total disrespect to my ancestors and denying who i am .that does not mean i disrespect other cultures .unless some dont know their background .it is like a child who has never met his mother or father .

You should compare the hablobgroup of Sumerians with the ones of the people of Central Asia. Their language is agglutinated like the turc, Hungarian language. Apparently 300 commun words are identified with the turc language.

Who thought that the sky was held up by the goddess Nut, or that Osiris was murdered by his brother and resurrected by his sister/wife. Who gave them their names and developed the rituals ? The list of queries goes on and on. I am looking forward to learning more from your posts. Many congratulations on what you have achieved.

But!! Always remember, sir, that the government of George Bush the son destroyed the maximum of the Mesopotamian civilization! That is, Iraq today! Why and for whom? Would you not be surprised, like me, that in the twentieth century and beyond, there are still enemies of civilization and those with expensive neckties ??

Interesting. If possible do you mind sharing more? I’m interested.

      Alijamil,

Follow this link to The Iran Hostage Crisis.
      https://history.state.gov/departmenthistory/short-history/iraniancrises

Know the history of situations before giving into churlish emitionalisms. The Iran Hostage Crisis was not a clear cut good guys being victimized by the bad guys.

It is one part of history that launched Komeni into theocratic power. There is so very much story to the Iranian Revolution. I encourage you to read up on it.

Save your emotions for more appropriate venues.
I lived through those terrifying years. I will spare you my own emotional opinions unless you want to have an academic discussion.

Understand this too; while Europe and all of The West was crushed under the heel of a theocrocy called The Dark Ages,
Iran gloried in its Golden Age of sciences, philosophy, and arts.
When The Renassiance started Iran shared that knowledge with the West.

This world is not stagnant or simple. I challenge you to learn, grow, and teach,
Because it is truly spoken that history does repeat.

      Cheers

Sorry but I don’t agree with the sumerians being the 1st .
The Bible didn’t state anything like that. Nor the lost text nor the schools. If it not in those books I have to disagree.

Because the Bible is not factual. It was was created , revised, and books deleted all to control men. Not word of the Light or the many teachers who to teach us love.

  45. This is horrible research and very inaccurate but coming from the British who were out to destroy Assyrians makes sense they would forget about Assyrians who are the first civilization

    • Tyrone Ellington

      You’re wrong and that’s ok.
